Project Title: Management of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) infesting stored maize through host plant resistance and plant origin pesticides
Project funding: Institute
Total approved cost of the project: 40.97 lakhs

Objectives:

(a) Identification of resistance sources against Sitophilus oryzae and Sitotroga cerealella
(b) Determination of inheritance of resistance in S. oryzae and S. cerealella
(c) Estimation of the losses of stored grain due to Sitophilus oryzae and Sitotroga cerealella
(d) Evaluation of the efficacy of different plant-origin biopesticides against development of S. oryzae and S. cerealella
(e) Isolation and characterization of insecticidal activity from selected plants

Project team:
Dr. (Mrs). P. Lakshmi Soujanya, Scientist, WNC, IIMR
Dr. J.C. Sekhar, Principal Scientist, WNC, IIMR

Major achievements: –

  • Maize treated with Ageratum conyzoides leaf powder at the rate of 2% w/w stored in High Density and Double layered polythene bags suffered minimum damage by storage pest Sitophilus oryzae L.
  • Application of Tinospora cordifolia water based leaf paste between the layers of double storage bags @ 2.0% w/w reduces the level of infestation and per cent grain weight loss by S. oryzae.
