Area of interest:

  • Major area of research includes improvement in protein quality and starch digestibility characteristics of maize. Maize is becoming an important crop in Indian agriculture as its production in increasing continuously for the last many years. However, the protein quality of maize is poor due to the deficiency of two essential amino acids (lysine and tryptophan) which are needed to be enhanced as per the requirement of World Health Organization. Considering the importance of protein quality in maize, a total of six genetic stocks rich in tryptophan and lysine have been developed registered with PPVFRA. Maize is also being improved for starch digestibility trait as cereals with slowly digestible starch are immensely required in order to check the ever increasing diabetic population in India. Keeping this in view, work has been initiated to develop resistant starch maize cultivars and a total of 400 genotypes has already been evaluated for starch digestibility characteristics in maize.

Most significant achievements (in last five years):

  • Dr. Dharam Paul Chaudhary has more than 14 years’ experience of teaching both at PAU, Ludhiana and Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi. He has made 50 publications in the journals of national and international repute. He has edited one book and published more than 15 book chapters. He has seven hybrid and 10 genetic stocks registered to his credit. Dr. Chaudhary has also guided 5 M. Sc. and 2 Ph. D. students of Biochemistry. His major area of research includes improvement in protein quality and starch digestibility characteristics of maize.
