16Work experience:

  • Scientist (Agronomy) from May 01, 2010 – till date: Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana (India)
  • Scientist (Agronomy) from Dec 18, 2009 – April 15, 2009: National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (India)

Area of interest:

Conservation agriculture, precision nutrient management

Most significant achievements (in last five years):

  • Sustainable intensification of maize system: A partial substitution of intensive puddled transplanted rice with zero till climate resilient maize for better crop productivity, soil health and labour and water shortage e., Maize-Wheat-Mungbean (MWMb) system and for complete substitution of both the crops i.e., by adoption of Maize-Mustard-Mungbean (MMuMb) system for twin benefits of water saving and higher economic benefits.
  • Enhancing nitrogen efficiency in maize under CA: Application of Neem Coated Urea (NCU) in MWMb system and Sulphur Coated Urea (SCU) for MMuMb system in conjunction with residue retention and bed planting can be adopted for higher annual increment in crop productivity and NUE.
  • Accounting benefits of residue in maize systems: The benefits of the crop residue as a source of nutrient, temperature moderation, ecosystem services in enhancing biological diversity and carbon sequestration and improved soil physical and bio-chemical health.
  • Legume for sustainable maize systems: In maize based cropping systems with addition of very less inputs and management, inclusion of certain legume crops like Sesbania has more benefits in term of improving soil health. Whereas with a meager input addition and crop management, introduction of short-duration dual purpose grain legume (e.g. mungbean) is an important intervention for higher economic profitability vis-a-vis improved soil health.
  • Outreach programme in maize: Planned and executed outreach programme in maize after 2016 and conducted 212 trainings and 3733 ha demonstrations across the country benefitting 12742 and 11965 stakeholders, respectively. Delivered over 60 talks in various training programmes delivered 51 TV or radio talks for popularization of the improved maize technologies.
  • Improved maize cultivars: associated with release and notification of the 10 hybrids of maize viz., normal grain maize (DMRH 1301, 1308 and 1305), QPM (LQMH 1), baby corn (LBCH 1, 2 and 3) and pop corn (LPCH 1, 2 and 3).
